Over the course of Hawaiian Culture, students will analyze different components of our Hawaiian Culture. Students will look at the following: Language, Food, Arts, Traditions/Customs, and Religion to analyze how the Na 'Oiwi created a VIBRANT HAWAIIAN SOCIETY! Through the analysis of these components students will gain a greater appreciation of who they are as Hawaiians and hopefully takes steps in the future to improve the overall well being of people of Hawaiian Ancestry.
1st Half of the 1st QTR: Overview of Culture
The 1st half of the 1st QTR. students will concentrate on an over view of Hawaiian Culture. Students will be able to analyze the different components of culture and the impacts each component had on the Hawaiian people pre-contact. Students will also be able to evaluate the impact different cultural practitioners had on the perpetuation of the Hawaiian culture to help the Hawaiian people answer the question: "What does it mean to 'Think Hawaiian?'"
1st Half of 2nd QTR: Ho'omana
The 1st half of the 2nd QTR. students will concentrate on the religious aspect of our Hawaiian culture. Students will be able to identify the different Akua and the role the different Akua played in the daily lives of the Hawaiian people. Students will be able to evaluate the impact of religion on the daily lives of the people and the evolution of the society they created. Students will finally be able to understand the importance of religion to the Hawaiian people.
2nd Half of the 1st QTR: Kanaka
The 2nd half of the 1st QTR. students will concentrate on the first people of Hawaii and the society that was established before the arrival of Captain Cook. Students will be able to identify the early societal organizations that were set up and the analyze the impact these early organizations had on the survival of the people. Students will also be able to evaluate the impact people had on the environment and the impact the people will have on the development of the aspects of culture.
2nd Half of 2nd QTR: Lifestyle
The 2nd half of the 2nd QTR. students will concentrate on specific aspects of the Hawaiian lifestyle. Students will be able to analyze the different aspects of culture not covered in the previous units. Students will be able to evaluate the Hawaiian lifestyle prior to the arrival of Captain Cook and analyze why it could be argued the Hawaiian people created a vibrant Hawaiian society. Students will finally be able to evaluate the importance of Hawaiian culture to Hawaiians today and how it helps contemporary Hawaiians "Think Hawaiian"
